CityArtLab – Minsk (2011)

The project was held in Minsk, Belarus in collaboration with Y-Gallery for Contemporary Art and supported by Swedish Institute. Social art practice is the core for CityArtLab working with murals, photography, video, text, performances and interventions. The mural works Hallberg have titled “A Wall to The City“, the walls have been made in different contexts but the methodology has always been the same working with storytelling and collaborative practices.

A temporary art collective is formed and will work with negotiations of public space with the gallery as studio, CItyArtLab was initiated in 2011 by Swedish artist & Curator Anna Viola Hallberg. It was originally carried out in the city of Mariestad, for the month of December the collective will have Minsk as its base and artists from Belarus, Russia and Sweden will work side by side with the general public with art practice that is socially based focusing on sustainable aspects of life in Minsk. The ten days, our stay in Minsk are over as of December 9th. The dinners came to have a very central function in understanding the present and talking about the future. The interaction with people of Minsk was much lower than originally planned for. The harsh political situation is likely a response to this. The craftivism day, and the graffiti project was carried out almost according to plan. Performances or interventions became in addition to dinners the central functions as attempts to “reclaim” public space. A sphere that entails physical, emotional and intellectual. This embracess creative, artistic and critical initiatives. The project is located at the boarders of Social Sculpture, interventions, graffiti, video, photograpy, craftivism and performance.

The conversation at dinners are central to what will happen at

Ygallery. From November 29th to December 8th a select group of guests will participate in the dinners and critically explore public space of the city of Minsk. Each dinner is set to result in one or more tasks to be carried out the following day. For this the temporary artcollective will turn to local artists as well as the general public to address the matters. It is all part of the collaborate mapping process.
